Summer Camps at The Academy of Code

Our summer courses take place in venues across Dublin, and cater to students from second class* all the way to leaving cert level. See below for a full list of dates and venues.

CODE CAMPS AND STEAM LABS - Primary School

Whether you want to learn to code or hone in on your existing skills - The Academy of Code is the summer camp for both motivated newbies and seasoned coders.

Following a great summer last year, we will be returning to all venues delivering our famous fun-focused code camps. This year, we are excited to introduce a new STEAM camp across all our venues.

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

Our STEAM camp is being designed with an emphasis on fun and creativity, delivered by both tech experts and primary school teachers.

Students from primary school (second class upwards) can take part in the STEAM camps, which blend code with fun games, challenges, puzzles and serious learning.

CODE CAMPS (Oatlands/ St. Pauls)

These camps offer code lovers a chance to dive deep into various coding languages. Depending on the student’s age and experience they will get to try some or all of the below:

  • Scratch - a fantastic introductory language, especially for younger students

  • Processing - a Java-based graphical language. The basis for most of our term-time courses, and a fantastic introduction to coding (students who have studied at the Academy of Code previously will get the chance to work on advanced Processing projects)

  • HTML/CSS - learn to build and edit websites using HTML and CSS

  • Lego Mindstorms, Python, Arduino and more

STEAM LABS (All Primary School VEnues)

  • Science and Mathematics in every day life - surveys and challenges

  • Technology - Programmable hardware

  • Coding - Drawn from the Code Camp curriculum above

  • Engineering - Designing and creating structures

  • Music Technology (Arts) - recording, composing, mixing and remixing songs

Taste of Computer Science

AoC-Spring2017-31.jpg

Get a taste of computer science this summer at the Academy of Code. This course is aimed at 13 to 19-year-old students and is the perfect opportunity to get a feel for what a 3rd level course in computer science is like.

Taste of Computer Science is divided into junior (13- to 15-year-olds) and senior (16- to 19-year-olds) classes.

The primary teaching language at the Academy of Code is Processing, a Java-based language frequently used at third level institutions for computer science introductory courses. Students at Taste of Computer Science will get a chance to experience this and other technologies throughout the week.

For students who are already passionate about computing, or for those who are just interested in seeing what programming is all about, this week long course is the perfect way to dip a toe in the water, and maybe take a first step towards a career in the most exciting and dynamic industry around!
